"Just loaded XP on a acer 5516 and I have the SM Bus Controller device driver missing, where can I get the chipset driver for XP?"

Here is the location of the SM Bus controller ( SouthBridge Controller )

Go to the bottom of the page to "Additional Downloads"
You can install either the "South Bridge Driver" 3.6 MB or "Raid Driver" 4.1MB to remove the install errors on XP's hardware page in device manager.

(Special Thanks To Mr. PATRICK HARRIS)

Hello

I found your site, and hopefully you can help me. Just bought an Aspire 5516 that came with Vista Home Basic on it.

Obviously I want it off there. However, when I try to install XP Pro SP2 I get the following error, when setup gets to " Starting Windows"

*** Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

I tried loading the SATA driver you recommended ( not sure which, of the many displayed to use).

However I get the exact same result.

An Interesting note: If I try to install a Win7 beta, I do not get the error at the same point. I cancel before the actual installation occurs.

But it gets past the "starting Windows" dialog.

I would first like to take the time in thanking you for your generous help. Secondly, do you have any idea what might be happening, and any suggestions on how to

correct it, and get XP Pro on the system

Many, Many Thanks for Your Valuable Time

Patrick

Thanks for response... have you configured SATA mode in the BIOS? U probably need to change the SATA mode in the bios.
XP doesn't natively support SATA and thus gives you a blue screen during install.
It wont even get to the stage where it takes additional drivers to show the SATA.

I don't think my 5516 has a webcam. The installers do not find the device. Its a 5516-5474 model. Anyone else know if some of these do not have webcams?

Thanks!
Mike

Oh and its the AHCI mode that throws the bsod for the xp install. Just change it in the bios (F2) as said above.

Thanks for this site!

You are right, Acer Aspire 5516-5474 hasn't a webcam, the Chicony Camera Driver above is for Acer Aspire 5516-5063.

Anyone getting this error:

*** Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

While trying to install from an Windows XP SP2 disc on an Acer Aspire 5516 can fix the problem by changing SATA settings in your BIOS to IDE Native from IDE AHCI. Thank you to the Anonymous who suggested this earlier in the thread.

i cant connect to any network, i remove the security of my wi-fi router and thats the only way to connect the aspire 5516. the msg is "windows cant connect to the selected network, maybe the netwprk isnt in the range, update the avaible networks list" well something like that. my wireless card is an atheros AR5007EG. and i downloaded the driver from acer's site, so any ideas?, if some 1 know something plz send me a mail to aktkgo@gmail.com thanx

For those of you reading this who are wiping Vista and decide to go win 98 + XP upgrade:
A couple of tricks...
1) you'll need gcdrom.sys to get the SATA drive running (after switching to classic IDE emulation in the BIOS). It replaces Oakcdrom.sys for IDE drives with identical usage.
2) You'll need to edit your system.ini file after the first reboot of 98 setup (f8 for menu).
Below the [386Enh] line add:
MaxPhysPage=30000
3) Again in windows\system.ini
this time below [vcache]
MaxFileCache=200000
4)After the second reboot the install freezes while detecting the video card... manually edit system.ini again changing
*DisplayFallBack=0 to DisplayFallBack=1
5) After the third reboot the \bootlog.prv file reveals that esdi_506.prv failed to initilize.
The trick is to rename the file (thus avoiding any 32 bit protected mode disk access).
6) You should be in good shape now, 98 installs, then XP with the drivers above.

Hi,

I used the information posted here to install XP on my Acer 5516, where I changed the SATA settings to IDE Native and also didn't delete the PQService partition.

But it seems I have lost around 20gb which I am not able to retrieve back. I deleted the 'C' drive partition and the unpartitioned drive showed 20GB less space.

Am I doing something wrong here? Please provide your expert advice.

Thanks Much

Thanks for the new drivers listing at http://game.amd.com worked great for the acer 5516 smbus. Just a note, once you get there click on "drivers & tools > motherboard/integrated video... > Individual drivers (windows xp 32)". Southbridge and raid drivers will be there.
